Scouting in-licensing opportunities for a mid-size pharma company
Challenge:
A pharmaceutical company with a proprietary clinical trial technology made the strategic decision to diversify their development arm by acquiring and/or in-licensing pharmaceutical candidates with particular criteria of interest. The company had already performed its own search and evaluation of opportunities using traditional industry sources, yet wanted to expand their search to include sources such as universities, charitable foundations, and government funded research centers. Alacrita was tasked with supporting identification and screening of licensing opportunities for further investment considerations by the company. This approach required a customized and manual work-plan.
Solution:
Alacrita first created an outreach master database to track progress and record feedback. The database was constructed to include academic/university assets, institutional and foundational assets, clinical centers, incubators, and government sponsored development programs which fit the search criteria. Database results were made filterable by region, therapeutic indication area(s), therapeutic modality, and stage of development.
The search was conducted utilizing the following:
- Product pipeline and patent databases.
- Manual review and outreach to university TTOs, foundations and institutes of interest.
- Thorough and manual review of ongoing clinical trials with an emphasis of sponsor search criteria.
Candidate opportunities which met initial search criteria and passed client initial review were investigated further by Alacrita through discussions with the respective program science lead(s), and gathered data was provided and presented to the client for review by their internal science and investment teams. During the engagement, the database was continually updated to include status of outreach, and feedback from client.
